With the Super W 2021 campaign just around the corner, we’re catching up with the squad to gain insight into their unique journey to professional rugby.
This week caught up with the 2020 Sue Roberts trophy winner, Tamika Jones. The Western Force and Wanneroo RUFC player is a star of the local game and we can’t wait to see her light up the Super W this season.
What was your first ever rugby experience? How old were you and why did you start playing initially?
My first ever rugby experience was when I was 13 back in 2017 when my best friend had asked me to come down and play viva 7s, she used to always ask me to come down and play. At the time I was never really interested in thinking of playing footy as a sport, nor even training for it, but that one time I finally went down to see what was so good about it. I instantly fell in love with it and never looked back.
I think the other reason why I am continually playing rugby is because of the lifelong friends you make along the way and the memories you make.
What is your most memorable rugby moment to date? Highlight or unforgettable experience?
My favourite highlight is when WA won bronze at the u17s national championships in 2019, as each year we’d always just be below from top 3 and finally reaching to 3rd was something to be proud of. I’d also have to say the most memorable moment was winning the Sue Roberts trophy in 2020 being my first year playing women’s rugby for 15s aside.
What would you say to younger females wanting to get into the sport?
Just give it a go, you never know until you try. Also to just believe in yourself and tell yourself that you can do it, because anyone can if you put yourself to it. Have good determination and stay focused on things that you know are right, and you’ll get to where you want to be in no time.
Who are three people you would invite to dinner and why?
The three people I would invite to dinner and why would be my mum and dad, as they have done everything they possibly can to care for me and to make sure that I am always 100% happy. They are always there when I need them, and will do anything to help me succeed to where I want to be, and for everything they do for me behind the scenes. I am just always grateful for them.
The third person I would invite to dinner would be my best friend, as she has always been my number one supporter no matter what. She has always been the best friend to give me a confidence boost for when I need it and she has always stuck by my side. I am very happy for her.
Stay tuned as we get to know more about the talented women from the Western Force Super W team in the coming weeks.
