Fortescue Academy graduate, George Poolman is still shaking off the nerves in his breakout year, soaking up the challenge of Super Rugby Pacific like a sponge.

“At the start when I was named, it was definitely a shock and surprise. I have just been taking each week as it comes and learning as much as I can to improve and get better,” Poolman admitted.

“At the moment, it is still super exciting, I still get nervous, but I will continue to try and do my job every match.”

The Fortescue Academy has proven instrumental in Poolman’s development, highlighting the exposure he received, progressed his match play tenfold.

“Getting the experience in the preseason games last year as an Academy player was amazing. I had only just turned 19 when in the Academy, so when I was called up to the main squad this year I was a lot more prepared.”

The versatile back, has covered the wing and midfield for the Force this season, relishing in the opportunity to broaden his skillset.

“I knew being versatile was a positive for me, my goal in pre-season was just to see if I could get any minutes at all. So, to be put on for nearly every match now has been unreal,” said Poolman.

“Having to cover lots of positions, I've learnt that mindset is really important. Especially with the situations we have put ourselves in lately, coming on in the second half when we are down can be daunting. So, I've spoken to a lot of the players about being more role focused and not try and do too much.”

“Crono has been really good, helping me with my mindset as he has a lot of experience coaching players at this level. He has made me feel at ease. He has also made me comfortable and confident in myself. I now go into every match knowing what I can do. I don't feel out of place.”

“I also have been rooming with Manasa and he's been great with helping me get comfortable on the wing and also with mindset stuff. He has all the tricks and lots of advice to share. It's really nice to learn off him and his habits.”

The support of his family is unwavering, flying to Perth every chance they have.

“A real highlight has been playing in front of my friends and family for the first time in Sydney.”

“My parents have actually travelled to two of the three home games in Perth; they think they are the good luck charm.”

Poolman continues to make his mark, named in the finishers this Saturday at #23.
